| Jay N. Darling lived in an age when social stigma based on race and religion was widely accepted as a fact of life. Despite the fact that he was a white, wealthy Protestant, his personal sense of humanity led him to rebel against society's "norm." It is a credit to Darling's ethics that he criticized society's accepted prejudices, and it is a credit to his cartooning skills that he conveyed his sense of humanity so effectively. |
